Church Missions & Activities

Nestucca Valley Presbyterian Church has a strong emphasis on Bible Study and Community Service. Below are some of the activities our members are engaged in, and groups sponsored by the church.

Bible Study

A meditative time on Friday mornings. We share poetry or a short story to initiate some discussion. Sometimes people share their own work. The time is often but not always theologically centered.

Often it is based on the study of a book of the Bible. At other times it is the study of a current or popular book. We have done some thematic studies as well. The classes are held at a college level. They involve the participant in historical and cultural thinking on a variety of subjects. There is some reading outside of class. Regular attendance makes it easier to stay current.

Life Transitions

Life Transitions is a self-help group that addresses grieving the loss of a loved one, facing serious health issues, and changing living situations. We meet for one hour on Monday mornings at 11:00 a.m. in the church narthex to discuss these life challenges. Shelley Stoll is the facilitator and can be reached at 503-392-3092 if you would like more information.

NVPC Women’s Group

This group meets quarterly. We begin with a bible study and then a business meeting. For more info, contact Colleen Hagerty at 503-392-9301.

Deacons

The Deacons provide support for this church by recognizing birthdays & anniversaries and caring for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one or have become ill. They also provide poinsettias and lilies for the holiday. Our deacons serve three-year terms and are elected by the congregation.

Heifer International

The Session and the PWA are sponsoring a year-long mission drive for Heifer International. The group provides animals for the poorest of the world in order to provide nutrition and a source of additional income. Animals include chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, and llamas. Besides supplying milk, eggs, and meat, the animals are often bred by the villages thus spreading the income.

South County Food Pantry

The food pantry is open every other Tuesday from 12:30 to 6:00 pm. Supported heavily by the Oregon Food Bank, we provide a wide variety of healthy food for community members in need.

Nestucca Valley Backpack Food Program

The non-profit status for this community-sponsored program has been provided by the NVPC, as well as tremendous volunteer support. We provide backpacks filled with child-friendly nutritious food at the end of every school week to needy children to make sure they arrive at school on Mondays ready to learn. For more information, click on the link above or call Jo Rack at 602 509 4071.

Geri’s Community Garden

Vegetable garden plots are now available to our food pantry clients.

AA

AA meetings occur every Monday night at 7:00 pm in the fellowship hall.

Hiking and Kayaking

During the summer, there are somewhat regular hiking and kayaking expeditions. The level of difficulty varies so that most people can participate at different times.
